Two Florida Men Were Arrested After Shooting Biracial Teens

"They were screaming, 'They're shooting at us. They're shooting at us,'" the victims' mother said.

Two men are being charged for a hate crime after opening fire on a biracial boy and girl in Lake County, Florida. According to WFTV 9, the victims' mother, Michelle Sabb, reported the teens were returning home from buying candy when the men shot at them.

"There is a path behind all of the homes on this road that all the children take to the bus stop," Sabb said. "The bus stop is in front of the church over here on Goose Prairie (Road), and that's the route they take anywhere."

On March 17, her 16-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter heard the gunfire while walking on the trail on property owned by a local church.

"They were screaming, 'They're shooting at us. They're shooting at us,'" Sabb added. "Thank God that they were able to get home, [because] there are a lot of kids [who don't]. Trayvon [Martin] -- he didn't make it home. What if my son wouldn't have made it home?"

The shooters, identified as James Reidnauer, 30, and Brent van Besien, 33, claimed they thought the siblings were methamphetamine users. Police say the suspects fired one shot near the girl's foot and one in the air before shouting racial slurs.

Per the Orlando Sentinel, both men could face hate crime charges for aggravated battery with a firearm. Deputies reported finding casings from a handgun on the scene. Reidnauer confessed to firing what he deemed a “warning shot" at the victims.

Fortunately, both of Sabb's children made it home safely after the terrifying incident.
