The Nina Simone And Kamala Harris Connection, Explained.

Nina Simone's daughter and granddaughter say VP Kamala Harris is to blame for why they no longer have rights to Simone's estate.

Vice President Kamala Harris is being accused of separating singer Nina Simone’s family from her estate, however, a business associate of the late singer says that’s not the case at all.

TMZ obtained Simone’s will and discovered the late singer wanted most of her estate assets to go towards a charitable trust that would “benefit the musical education of Black African children from Ghana, Liberia and South Africa” and that’s exactly what Harris did. While the connection between the two may seem random, here's how it happened:

Before Simone passed away, she appointed South African singer Miriam Makeba as the trustee over her estate, TMZ reported. Documents stated that if Makeba could not fill the role as trustee, then she could appoint a successor. However, when Simone passed away in 2003, her daughter Lisa Simone Kelly was put in charge of the singer’s estate and trust.

In 2013, Kelly was accused of misappropriating funds that were tied to the charitable trust. According to court documents, Kelly took $2 million from the estate's coffers with the majority of the funds deposited into her personal company, the Daily Beast reported.

Harris, then California's attorney general, decided to step in and determine the fate of Simone’s estate. Harris’ office and Kelly reached an agreement where Simone's daughter was asked to relinquish her rights to oversee the estate and the late artist's work.

Ultimately, Simone’s business associate says Harris did the right thing.

However, in recent days Simone’s granddaughter, RéAnna Simone, has taken to social media to criticize Harris and to get back what she says is rightfully hers.

“Nina’s granddaughter here. My family doesn’t run her estate anymore. It was taken away from us & given to white people. Our family name was DRAGGED in the media. We get NO royalties, nothing. Wanna hold someone accountable? Ask Kamala Harris why she came for my family #NinaSimone,” RéAnna said in a tweet.

RéAnna used her Twitter platform to explain why people should look into the case. She says Harris is to blame for her feeling separated from her family, in addition to her family no longer owning the rights to any of Simone’s work and why her mother Kelly can’t even speak on the matter at all.

“My grandmother created something beautiful with her life while she was here on this earth, even through all her pain. I am SO PROUD of her legacy!! I am so proud to be her grandchild. But I feel separated from my legacy. As if it isn’t even mine. Let me explain – My grandmother is influencing the masses (as she should!!). I see her on billboards. I see artists covering her music. It breaks my heart to know that white people are making money off of grandmas hard work and that we have had all of our rights as her family STRIPPED from us!!" RéAnna said in a tweet.

She added in a tweet that Harris also used one of her grandmother’s songs to be sworn in as the vice president of the United States.

“OH WAIT, While we’re asking Kamala questions ask her why after all of this pain and suffering she put us through a Nina Simone song was sang at the inauguration to swear her in as VP?! She knew what she was doing.”

RéAnna is demanding anyone who is interested in her family's matter to question Harris on her motives, The New York Post reported
