Kehlani: ‘I Finally Know I’m A Lesbian’

The singer, who previously identified as queer, said she uses she/they pronouns.

If there's anything singer and songwriter Kehlani now knows for sure, it's that she's a lesbian.

“Wanna know what’s new about me?” she told fans on Tuesday on Instagram Live. “I finally know I’m a lesbian!”

The 25-year-old, who previously identified as queer and uses she/they pronouns is a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ visibility. In addition to her own, Kehlani has continuously encouraged people to explore their sexuality.

The multi-hyphenate artist also explained why she chooses to use pronouns that aren’t intrinsically linked to one gender, affirming their fluidity— a quality she said she's always been perceptive of.

“I’m definitely on the non-binary scale,” she told DIVA Magazine in a 2020 interview. “But I still prefer and am totally fine with the pronoun ‘she’. My energy has always been extremely fluid between masculine and feminine so that’s why I use ‘queer’, and also, queer is inclusive to non-binary people.”

Back in 2018, Kehlani opened up about their sexuality sharing on Twitter that she is neither bisexual nor straight, but explicitly queer.

“cuz i keep geddin [sic] asked.. i’m queer. not bi, not straight,” she wrote in a now-deleted tweet. “i’m attracted to women, men, REALLY attracted to queer men, non binary people, intersex people, trans people. lil poly pansexual papi hello good morning. does that answer your questions?”

In response to Kehlani’s announcement, many people within the LGBTQ+ community celebrated her reveal.

“Not only is Kehlani a lesbian, they're a she/they lesbian. Y'all don't understand how seen I feel. Her music and lyrics I've always related to and i know I'm just gonna connect even more,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another Twitter user responded to the singer, whose full name is Kehlani Parrish, teasing that she is ready to do whatever it takes to win her affection.

“this is my formal announcement to Ms Parish if you are FREE tomorrow, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7th, and looking for your new love, I AM HERE. I will take you on picnic dates, make amazing anniversary gifts, braid your hair, and take you on fun tours of Chicago. I save kittens,” the Twitter user wrote.

After publicly clarifying their sexual orientation, she also explained that “coming out” was not a necessity in their private life.

"I didn’t even really have to come out in my private life,” she said, according to a feature story for The Advocate.

“I don’t walk down the street and people look at me and go, Oh, I bet she’s queer. Or I bet that she’s into women or anything like that because of the way I present. That’s all privilege and I think that there are quite a few artists who were truly at the forefront but weren’t able to make the strides that I was able to make being 100 percent myself because of the way they present and the biases and the phobias of the American public and the world.... I’ve been lucky, super lucky,” she added.

In 2017, Kehlani released a hit single, "Honey," as an ode to her sexuality. In the profoundly personal ballad, Kehlani wanted to illustrate her relationship with a woman.

“I am very openly queer,” the California native told MTV News. “I thought that my music lacked representation of how my actual life is. I thought it was important to be myself fluidly in my music and not just in my life. My art mimics my life, so you know I have a girlfriend, and it’s only right that that’s what I make music about and that I’m able to put that out confidently.”
