Eminem dropped a surprise album, Kamikaze, on us Thursday night. While his fans seem excited to have new music from the Detroit rapper, it hasn't come without backlash after he used a homophobic slur against a fellow rapper.
On "Fall," Tyler, The Creator is one of several rappers catching Marshall Mathers' smoke, but he went a little too far.
“Tyler create nothing, I see why you called yourself a f****t, b***h/ It's not just 'cause you lack attention/ It's 'cause you worship D12's balls, you're sacrilegious," Eminem raps.
Tyler has been critical of Eminem in the past, but fans of both artists took offense to the lyrics. Although he censored the word, in 2018, we know a slur when we hear its first syllable.
Can't even say I'm surprised that Eminem is still using homophobic slurs in 2018 bc he's a fucking child but Justin Vernon, what the hell are you doing on the track man. pic.twitter.com/z2ySJBNF85— Roisin O'Connor (@Roisin_OConnor) August 31, 2018
Man Eminem censoring that word lets me know he is well aware how quick it will get him tossed outta here in 2018 lmaoo— Prince Vegeta (@Presh_Frince) August 31, 2018
I'm really really wound up by the fact none of this Eminem coverage mentions the fact he's STILL using homophobic slurs in his music [censored, reversed whatever it's about INTENTION], with some headlines even MENTIONING TYLER but not the actual slur?— Daniel (@sillyolddaniel) August 31, 2018
Tyler, The Creator is gay. Eminem isn’t. https://t.co/yzJh6YRF7a— liam (@LMKNTH) August 31, 2018
A nine year old boy killed himself just last week because of homophobic bullying so a mainstream rapper suggesting that word is acceptable to use in that context is kinda fucked up wouldn’t you agree Wiggles https://t.co/5xpyIbFm86— liam (@LMKNTH) August 31, 2018
unfriendly reminder that tyler, the creator is banned from the UK for using the word "fxggot" on his first two albums, then he came out on 'flower boy' and eminem pointed that slur at him in a song released today but eminem will not be banned from the UK— G🧜🏾♀️ (@oneofthosefaces) August 31, 2018
While Eminem took a shot at other rappers including Drake, Lil Yachty, Joe Budden, Lil Pump, Lil Xan and Machine Gun Kelly on the track, the homophobia was the loudest. The rapper has denied being homophobic for years, claiming his use of anti-gay slurs is the equivalent of calling someone a "b***h" or a "punk a**hole."
"So, that word was just thrown around so freely back then," he said in a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone. "The real me sitting here right now talking to you has no issues with gay, straight, transgender, at all. I'm glad we live in a time where it's really starting to feel like people can live their lives and express themselves."
Personal problem or not, words mean things, and words that don't belong to you or your community aren't yours for the taking.
