In a conversation with colleague Chris Cuomo on Thursday, Lemon said that he had to stop being friends with people endorsing or supporting President Donald Trump "because they're too far gone."
"I have many people who I love in my life,” he said according to The Hill. “There are a lot of friends I had to really get rid of because they are so non-sensical when it comes to this issue. If they’re willing to come back and willing to live in reality, then I will welcome them with open arms”
The news anchor added that he’s had difficulty reasoning with Trump supporters despite any facts or evidence he provides.
“I try and I try and I try, they say something really stupid and then I'll show them the science and I'll give them the information, and they still repeat those talking points," Lemon said.
The 54-year-old said he believes Trump supporters have to want “to live in reality” and seek truth instead of promises and talking points.

“I think they have to hit rock bottom like an addict, right? And they have to want to get help, they have to want to know the truth, they have to want to live in reality, they have to want to be responsible not only for other people's lives but for their lives.”
Cuomo, on the other hand, was a bit more hopeful about the prospects of the president, and his supporters, coming around even if they are wrong about issues like the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I believe in a lot of the people that follow this president because they are so desperate in their own frustration, and they are right to be. They just picked the wrong change agent," Cuomo said. "And look, he can change and everybody can change. Maybe even me. But on this pandemic, he’s lying to them and it is going to make them sick and I know people who have gotten sick because they listen to him. And it is wrong.”
Earlier this month, Lemon criticized NBC after the network announced it was hosting a town hall in Miami with the president that would air at the same time as the town hall broadcast of former vice president Joe Biden in Philadelphia, as Blavity previously reported.
Originally a debate was planned instead of the split town halls, but President Trump decided not to participate after learning it would be a virtual event.
"This is an outright embarrassing ratings ploy on behalf of NBC," Lemon said. "And I am shocked and surprised that they would allow the president of the United States to do their programming and manipulate them into doing this. It is embarrassing."
A source at ABC News told The Wrap that company officials were amazed by NBC's decision to host President Trump's town hall, while an NBC News insider told the publication that it stood behind its decision.
"The Trump campaign did not dictate or request the time slot, nor express any preference," an NBC News spokesperson said.
The president’s town hall lasted an hour, and Biden's ran about 90 minutes. Trump spent time attacking the election process while Biden spoke about the pandemic and developing the country’s government.
